So, today I'm going to tell you about the first anime I ever watched: Squid Girl. I was 13, and had heard some friends talking about it, and wanted to check it out. At the time, I had never seen any anime at all and I hardly knew what it was, so you can imagine my total shock after watching the first episode. And then, for some reason, I clicked for the next episode. And the next. And, after a few weeks, I had finished the entire two seasons of Squid Girl.
At first glance, the anime looks sort of ridiculous. I mean, come on, it's a girl who's also a squid. But, I was surprised to find that the anime actually had some deep and meaningful themes to it, through the humor and squid puns. This anime has one of the best dubs you can get, putting in a bunch of horrible puns like, "Ink-creidble!" and "They'll never know what squid them!" Needless to say, a lot of thought was put into the dub, and it turned out really, really, good. Another thing I like about this anime is the art style. It's nice and clean, as you can see in the picture. The characters are easy to differentiate between, as there's a variety of hair colors and styles. The character development of Squid Girl and Eiko is also notable throughout the show. I really like the way they
end up being friends. Yet another awesome thing about this anime is squid girl herself. Not only does she have tentacles that move at her command with power, speed, and accuracy, but she can also glow in the dark, breathe underwater, and spit squid ink. Gross. But, these powers are what makes squid girl an exciting character.
One strange thing about this anime that I neither like or dislike is the lack of romance. While there are a few love stories going on with the minor characters, squid girl herself doesn't involve in any romance whatsoever, except for being chased by Sanae, who she has no interest in. There are some other characters that seem to show affection for her, but she seems oblivious to it all, which I think further builds her character.
Another strange thing is Squid Girl's form. Have you ever seen Fairy Tail? The main character is Lucy, a busty, curvy, blonde girl. However, squid girl is almost flat chested and, as seen to the right, wears a one piece. She's modest, and I really like that about this show. Sure, the other girls aren't nearly as modest as squid girl, but it's definitely notable that the show is not aiming for viewers that just want pretty girls to look at.But the best part of this anime? Well, that has to be the music. I know I sound really ridiculous when I say this, but the music in this anime, openings and closings, is freaking awesome. You can tell a lot of thought was put into these themes, and I really like the way they turned out.
So, time for the big question: Should you watch squid girl? The answer is absolutely yes. It doesn't matter what age, gender, or race you are, you should still watch this show just for the pure silliness of it. And the squid puns. Love the squid puns.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and don't forget to share and subscribe for more anime! I'll be telling you all about how much I hate Fairy Tail.
Thanks a million!
